The first dated Russian coins appeared in year 1596 during the reign of the last tsar from the Rurik dynasty, Fedor Ivanovich, the son of Ivan IV the Terrible. At the time Russia used the Byzantine calendar with the starting point as the date of creation of the world in the Jewish tradition - 5509 BC. The year started on September 1. The Byzantine calendar was used in Russia until Peter the Great's calendar reform in 1700.
