I am very happy to finally announce the release of the Online Russian Tsarist Coins Identification Tool. The purpose of this tool is to facilitate the identification of coin die varieties for Russian trarist coin minted 1535 to 1696. The tool allows you to upload your coin image, select potential matches from the catalog based on advanced search criteria and overlay the catalog images onto your coin photograph for comparison. The catalog includes 1'795 Russian trarist coin types from 1535 to 1696 spanning the rules of Ivan IV Vasilyevich the Terrible to Peter I Alekseyevich the Great.
The database of coins is based on the works of I.V. Grishin and V.N. Kleschinov (GK) published in the series of catalogs from 1992 to 2007. The images are based on the coin die traces and sketches from GK catalogs. The descriptions of the coin type obverse, reverse, legends, mintmarks and other symbols were fully manually digitised by myself.
This is a first release of the tool and I will humbly welcome any feedback about the functionalities and various improvements that you could recommend. A free trial version available to all site visitors. It is limited to the coinage of Ivan IV Vasilyevich the Terrible and includes 105 coin types. Full access to the complete database of 1795 coins can be purchased for a small fee as a token of appreciation for the long hours put into the project.
